After a tremendous season last year with more powder days than we can remember since the big record year back in 1986, the Breckenridge natives are restless and have already been making their first turns of the season at the nearby A-Basin day ski area. With great snow so far this year and excellent coverage already on the slopes of Breckenridge itself, we are ready for another record breaking season.
Breckenridge is located just on the edge of the Continental Divide only a short 80 miles west of Denver on I-70. Ease of travel makes Breckenridge a great favorite for those driving from the surrounding areas (many drive from Texas, Oklahoma, New Mexico, Kansas, Nebraska, Illinois and Missouri amongst others), and those flying in from farther away - many from Europe and even Australia! The Breckenridge ski area extends over 4 mountain peaks in the Ten Mile Range. The range runs 10 miles south from Peak One at I-70, to Peaks 7, 8, 9 & 10, where the ski area is located. With this vast amount of terrain, Breckenridge has a multitude of runs that can cater for all abilities. The local grooming team like to boast that their exquisite groomed runs are perfection itself - and you are guaranteed that - every green and every blue run are groomed every night!
Breckenridge is not only for beginners though, it also offers everything that the expert rider could possibly want, tight trees, knee pounding bumps (Devils Crotch, and Sluicebox are waiting) to the wide open above timberline bowl skiing offered by the Horseshoe Bowl, Imperial Bowl and the legendary Lake Chutes as much steep and deep as you can handle. Bottom line whatever challenges that you are looking for you will find it in Breckenridge Ski area.
But, wait just a minute! Breckenridge isnt only a ski area unlike many of the manufactured resorts, Breckenridge is first and foremost a REAL town. Dating back to the mining days of the 1860s and with a rich and varied history, Breckenridge retains the Victorian charm and feel of its pioneering days. Indeed the Historic District still lists 350 structures, making it the largest in the State! A stroll or horse drawn carriage ride around the Victorian heart of the town will take you back to a much simpler time, with the elegance and beauty of a bygone era. There are little wooden houses surrounded by well tended yards and white picket fences, historic cabins, even the old steam locomotives are still there to be seen!
Main Street and the center of Town are compact and everything you need is only a short stroll away. You can walk from one end to the other in about 15 minutes. Within that small core though there is shopping galore with an eclectic variety of stores, boutiques, showrooms and galleries. Restaurants abound too, and you can find everything from a burger and a beer or slice of pizza to 5 Star French Cuisine. Bars, clubs and great nighlife are there too, for those looking for a party you are sure to find one here! All this in a small 10 block area. As they say: Breckenridge The Perfect Mountain Town.
Unless you are a local though, how do you choose your vacation lodging? There are choices galore and prices too. Location-wise, as a general rule, the closer you get to a ski lift, the more expensive your lodging becomes. However, Breckenridge first opened in 1961, and building has continued since then. Is the place you are looking at 40 years old with some new siding, or something that isnt quite finished yet, with workers applying the finishing touches while you are there? Does Ski-in Ski-out really mean that, or is it a 150 yard trudge uphill in ski boots carrying your equipment, and even worse the kids too?
There is no substitute for local knowledge, but you must make sure that you also avoid vested interest too. A travel agent does not generally have enough of the local knowledge to make sure you get the best selection given your personal needs and requirements. Likewise, an individual company will sell you what they have to offer regardless of whether it fits your needs or not! So where do you go?
