When you think of skiing, youre likely to conjure up the white winters of the Swiss Alps, Mont Blanc in France, Vail in the US, or Mount Fuji in Japan.

But Latin America has of course the Andes. And Chile is where well be skiing this summer. The best news is that, given the tricky economic situation lived in the country, skiers are greeted each year with excellent package deals.

Despite being lesser known than those in Europe or North America, Chile has already hosted World Championships, and is also the chosen training ground for some national ski teams, such as the US. Do you wonder why?

Imagine living in a place where you are greeted each day by the amazing Andean mountains. Of course, Chileans pay a price in exchange for having such a wondrous backdrop pollution. Pollution easily gathers above the cities of Chile and given the sheer height of the mountains covering the region, pollution simply stales above with no way of escaping.

But a 2-hour drive towards the mountains quickly leaves the grey air behind and we reach the Portillo Hotel. Built in the 1940s on a site known to have been a burial ground used by the Incan people, the luxurious Portillo resort is one of the top ski resorts in Latin America, and given the quality of the slopes, it has been attracting professional skiers and daredevils to the Andes since the late 1800s.

The Andes, which peak at over 7,000m on Mount Aconcagua, are an idyllic destination even for non-skiers. The scenery is breathtaking, the mountain air is refreshing and the people of Chile are hospitable folk happy to help in whichever way they can.

The crowds at the Portillo are a mixed bunch from around the world. Many are not even there for the skiing. Thats why the Portillo offers a wide array of recreation, at the resort and outside.

On a sunny day, you can take part in guided walks along the trails, stop off for a picnic and return to the resort, get yourself into one of the external heated pools and contemplate the stars. A full week of this and youll return home feeling refreshed and ready to take on what comes along.

For skiers, however, adventure awaits you on the world-class Double Diamond chute known as The throat. There are easier slopes for beginner skiers or snowboarders and instructors are at hand to give you the basics. If youve skied before and feel a little rusty, a lesson or two on your first day will get you back on track. It is also important to point out that the Andes can be sneaky terrain and the slopes that are seemingly easy at first sight will put you to the test. So I always recommend even avid skiers to join a class to regain your confidence and relearn the basics it is a handy tool to have when traveling at the speed of light towards the window of a restaurant.

If you really want to experience life on the edge, heli-skiing is for you. It is not for me or for other light-hearted folk. But world-class skiers visit especially to heli-ski the Andes.

The third day is usually when the pain sinks in. Your tired muscles beg for a break, and on such a day, your best option is to visit the wine region. Chile produces some of the best wines in the world, and a visit to Los Vacos is the ideal escapade where you can taste some local Merlot or Cabernet.

A restful stay is assured at The Portillo, not only because there is a no tv house-rule but also cater to a maximum of 500 guests at a time. Kids also have a myriad of activities to choose from and allow parents a smooth, quiet stay.

For off-slope activities, local tour operators offer some very interesting activities, such as a visit and lunch with the indigenous Mapuche community, or trips to neighbouring resorts in Chile and in Argentina.

The Vale Nevado is only 1.5 hours away from Santiago and also offers deluxe accommodation in its lively resort and some of the best snowboarding in the region.

The Termas, or hostprings, de Chillan are 6 hours away from Santiago. But the reason why so many skiers will do this longer trip is the opportunity the ski the Chillan volcano. The local hotel is also deluxe, offers guests a world-class spa and the crowds are an international bunch. The off-slope activities are also varied enough to make it a good destination for families.

Las Lenas ski resort is probably where youll find the best deals, and the slopes are some of the most difficult, so youre likely to be rubbing shoulders with experienced skiers and world champions out on some training.

Known at the Gran Catedral, Bariloche is located in Argentina and given its unstable weather conditions has some great off-slope activities, such as hiking, sightseeing and a fantastic atmosphere at night.

All in all, and regardless of the resort you choose, the Andes are your best bet. Enjoy the high life at any its luxury resorts, experience some incredible skiing, meet people from around the world, sip some of the worlds finest wines, and wake up each morning to the fresh Andean air and one the most exquisite vistas in the world.

You don't have to be a contestant on the Survivor television program to learn wilderness survival skills. This information was second nature to our ancestors many generations back, but in today's high-tech world, we have grown out of touch with nature and unaware of how to provide such basic needs as food, water and shelter.

But, with modern conveniences at our fingertips, why should we learn how to build a fire without matches, or how to obtain safe water to drink? The answer is simple. One only needs to look back to Hurricane Katrina to see how quickly natural disasters can strike and deprive people of the electricity they depend upon to get them through each day. Even less predictable than hurricanes are other natural disasters such as earthquakes that strike without warning, and tornadoes that can materialize in minutes.

Many experts say that we are seriously at risk for a worldwide disease pandemic, like the Spanish flu that decimated populations across the globe in the first quarter of the 20th century. It is highly possible that an infectious disease epidemic of the bird flu could put such a strain on community infrastructures that services such as hospitals, police, fire departments and ambulances could not be depended upon, and residents would be forced to fend for themselves. Also, in today's increasingly uncertain world, the risk of a terrorist attack destroying power stations, water reservoirs or other civic infrastructures is not out of the question.

That is why the wise individual will invest a few hours to learn such survival skills as fire making, finding water, making shelter, finding food and preparing meals with only primitive tools. Gaining this knowledge should not be viewed as a bothersome chore, but rather as a fascinating challenge to become more self-sufficient. And, should disaster strike, these skills may very well prove to be more valuable than any insurance policy.

Some of the best sources for learning wilderness survival skills are the books by Tom Brown Jr. Mr. Brown was taught tracking and hunting at an early age by an Apache elder, and he went on to establish a survival school as well as writing such classic texts as Tom Brown's Field Guide to Wilderness Survival which clearly illustrates many ways to start a fire without matches, build wilderness shelters using only natural materials, identifying edible plants and hunting wild animals for food.

It only takes a few minutes and the investment of a few dollars to assemble a pocket size wilderness survival kit that contains a small knife, compass, matches, fishing hooks and line, and perhaps a lightweight, metallic space blanket. A visit to most any sporting goods shop or camping supply store will be time well spent if you should suddenly be faced with a survival situation. But more important than survival gear is the learning of wilderness survival skills. This is because the greatest asset in case of emergency is not your technology but your mental attitude. An individual with proper skills and knowledge can survive much more comfortably without any tools than someone who has lots of survival gear but does not know how to use it properly.

And even if you are never faced with an emergency situation that requires the application of wilderness survival techniques, you still might use them to win a million dollars if you should be chosen to be a contestant on the Survivor TV show.

We all know how it feels to ski or snowboard deep powder. The sheer bliss of winding downthe ski slopes without a care in the world. The peace, the quiet, and the fluffy snow blowing back on your face. You want it? Open you wallet.

Not true at many of Colorado's ski resorts. Sure, you can spend big bucks heli-skiing or chartering a snow cat for a full day of fun, but what if you were to just get your fill on a few ski runs and don't want to pay for a full day of such bliss?

Enter Keystone Resort Colorado. Keystone is known for their legendary 3 mountains, Dercum Mountain, North Peak, and the Outback. Keystone Resort caters to groups of people who vary widely in skiing ability. Beginner skiers usually stick to the front side of Dercum Mountain, yet if you're looking for the powder it's not too hard to find close by.

Secret Stash #1: The Windows at Keystone. It's a slight walk from the top of Dercum Mountain, but it's a really easy hike and you can call it quits and start making turns any time you want right off into the trees on a little-known run called The Windows. Steep, Deep and full of sparsely populated trees, you'll be in heaven for a good 1500 feet of vertical. Best of all, it looks like much more work than it really is on the map. The trail to hike is a snowcat trail and very well packed down and easy to walk on. It's a slight uphill, but not bad and easy if you are from a lower altitude.

Secret Stash #2: Timberwolf at Keystone's Outback. This one is lift-served so it gets skied off pretty quickly, but some great powder can be found in this area if you hit it right after a snowstorm. The best part is that the outback usually gets about 20-30% more snow than what Keystone officially reports in it's daily snow report. So.even if there is only 6 inches of fresh powder, count on a good 7-8 inches of fresh powder in Keystone's Outback area.

Secret Stash #3: At the very top of Keystone's Outback, there is a trail that you can hike up to the top of the next peak at 12,354 feet. Right in the middle is a small saddle where you can drop off to the South and hit the biggest powder stash Keystone has to offer and grab nearly 2000 vertical feet of sweet bliss. Sounds great doesn't it? Be warnedit's a really hard hike and takes a good 30 minutes. If you're not used to the altitude, you can kiss the rest of your day away from being so exhausted.

In recent years, Keystone found that they can actually make quite a lot of money giving people a ride on a snowcat so that they can grab some powder without having to hike much. For a mere $5.00 per run, you can grab a seat on a snowcat and do the same terrain as all those fit people are hiking to. This is a phenomenal opportunity to ski or snowboard some perfect powder without the high price of a full day trip.or maybe even get a taste of snowcat skiing to see what it is like.

Dont miss the powder skiing for the upcoming ski season. Think Keystone when you come to Colorado and remember the tips for finding the powder stashes. You just have to look for them.

Planning a winter ski vacation to Keystone can be a lot like making a snowball. You start off small, a couple of friends planning to spend a long weekend on the Keystone ski slopes. Before you know it, your friends girlfriends and/or boyfriends, brothers, sisters, next door neighbors, favorite waitress and milkman are included. Before you hang up your skis and wait for next year, think about all of the positives to traveling with a large group. You wont have to wait for your cousin Ed all day, because more than likely, there will be other beginners in your group. You wont need to kick yourself for forgetting sunscreen because somebody will have some you can borrow. Most important, though, you will be able to save big bucks! Thats right, there is power in numbers. Sometimes it takes a bit of research and being able to ask nicely.

By keeping the following three things in mind, you should be able to use the size of your group to your advantage, and save everybody a few dollars. Who knows, they may want to pull their savings and buy a gift for the person who did all of the planning.

Rule #1: Name a contact person.

Rule #2: Know what you are looking for.

Rule #3: Ask in advance, Ask frequently, and Ask politely

Lets discuss rule number one. If you decide on a contact person for your group, you can be sure you are not duplicating each others work. Even though planning a vacation in the snow is fun, it can also be overwhelming and time consuming. Create a list of tasks, such as lift ticket research, lodging research and airline research and then make one person responsible for each of those categories. If your group is trusting, you can give that person the authority to finalize the sale. If you need more information, schedule a time that the whole group can meet in order to hear about the top options.

Rule number two is very important. If you know exactly what you are looking for and where you can be flexible, you might have some leverage. For example, if your group wants to have a nice fondue dinner and is willing to dine before the crowd, you might be able to get a percentage off. When you know the dates of your travel and how much flexibility your group has on either beginning or end, you might be able to get a great ski lodging discount by fitting perfectly into a block of open nights in a specific unit. Every condo owner wants to have as many nights reserved as possible, and if one condo won't fit all, you will surely get a discount if you book multiple condos in the same complex. The key with this is PLANNING FAR IN ADVANCE.

Possibly the most important thing to remember is to ask for the discount. If you have 20 people buying lift tickets for 3 days each, call the ticket office and ask if they offer a bulk discount. By selling 60 lift tickets, the resort knows that is the potential for 60 lunches and countless aprs ski drinks being purchased. If they tell you they cant offer a discount, ask what it would take for them to knock just ten percent off of your purchase. When looking for lodging, discuss several options with the property manager.

For example: You have a group of 20 and would be willing to split into 5 condos that sleep four. Ask if there is a discount for renting five units. Or, your group of ten will take a condo that sleeps 16 and one that sleeps four. If never hurts to ask if the property manager will comp a couple of nights in the small condo. As your dates approach, call your contacts and ask about any other ways to save. During the slower times, such as a few weeks after Christmas, the deals may be sweeter in order to get people on the slopes. Above all else, remember your manners. Nobody will go the extra mile to please a whiner!

When you have hammered all of the particulars out, remind your friends and their friends and their milkman that they are responsible for their own gloves, swimsuits, etc. Then relax and look forward to the champagne snow and hot tub under the stars!

As long as you are sure of this, you're going to have a great time. Breckenridge offers mountain bike trails that go to the tops of mountains and down to the valleys. The scenery is breathtaking and without a doubt, you're going to love mountain biking in Breckenridge, CO.

As far as rafting goes, there are many options within 20-miles of Breckenridge. The water flows highest around mid-July because of all the snow which has melted from the mountains. There are plenty of guided trips who will help you navigate through the rivers.

The Outback at Keystone Ski Resort offers amazing views and so much more. The Outback Express is the only lift which services this beautiful region which includes the north bowl and some of the best tree runs in Colorado. Conquest and the victory chutes are on the north facing slope of the mountain. This means the snow will stay relatively soft which makes it a lot easier to make those important carves through the trees. When you get to the top of the Outback Express, go left and you'll be guaranteed soft snow. If you go right on a sunny day, you'll be skiing on crust.

The runs on the South facing side (right off the lift) are my favorite tree runs in Summit County. I suggest you wait for a powder day to experience the South side. The trees are so evenly spaced and the hill is at a favorable pitch. Out of: Breckenridge, A Basin, Vail and Beaver Creek, the Outback is my personal favorite place to ski in the trees.

The north bowl is accessible by snow cat, it only costs $5, which I believe is quite reasonable for such a beautiful view of the continental divide. If you are interested in free you can always hike the peak which only takes one hour. You can also hike about 15-minutes and still get a fresh line of powder. Each run from the 15-minute hike offers beautifully gladed forest with a long traverse at the bottom. If you are snowboarding, be sure to get speed at the bottom.

There is a great groomer which, runs right under the Outback Express ski lift. It has plenty of room for you to carve those gnarly turns. This run has a perfect pitch for moguls. Stay right at the top of the lift for a mogul field all the way down the right side of the groomer. These moguls are great to learn on. For the best skiing in Keystone make sure you head to the Outback. You won't be disappointed.

With great snow so far this year and excellent coverage already on the slopes of Breckenridge itself, we are ready for another record breaking season.

Breckenridge is located just on the edge of the Continental Divide only a short 80 miles west of Denver on I-70. Ease of travel makes Breckenridge a great favorite for those driving from the surrounding areas (many drive from Texas, Oklahoma, New Mexico, Kansas, Nebraska, Illinois and Missouri amongst others), and those flying in from farther away - many from Europe and even Australia! The Breckenridge ski area extends over 4 mountain peaks in the Ten Mile Range. The range runs 10 miles south from Peak One at I-70, to Peaks 7, 8, 9 & 10, where the ski area is located. With this vast amount of terrain, Breckenridge has a multitude of runs that can cater for all abilities. The local grooming team like to boast that their exquisite groomed runs are perfection itself - and you are guaranteed that - every green and every blue run are groomed every night!

Breckenridge is not only for beginners though, it also offers everything that the expert rider could possibly want, tight trees, knee pounding bumps (Devils Crotch, and Sluicebox are waiting) to the wide open above timberline bowl skiing offered by the Horseshoe Bowl, Imperial Bowl and the legendary Lake Chutes as much steep and deep as you can handle. Bottom line whatever challenges that you are looking for you will find it in Breckenridge Ski area.

But, wait just a minute! Breckenridge isnt only a ski area unlike many of the manufactured resorts, Breckenridge is first and foremost a REAL town. Dating back to the mining days of the 1860s and with a rich and varied history, Breckenridge retains the Victorian charm and feel of its pioneering days. Indeed the Historic District still lists 350 structures, making it the largest in the State! A stroll or horse drawn carriage ride around the Victorian heart of the town will take you back to a much simpler time, with the elegance and beauty of a bygone era. Fitting Fins should be a little loose; try standing on your toes in them; if your heel stays in the foot pocket, that's a good fit. Try the mask on by holding it against your face without the head-strap, and inhaling through your nose. If the mask stays on your face while you are breathing in, it should not leak in the water.

Setting up Wear the mask strap at the widest part of the head (above the ears) at a comfortable tightness. Angle the snorkel mouthpiece until the top of the tube points backwards behind your ear; to be sticking up out of the water when you are face-down. Make sure that no hair is trapped between the mask and your face, making the mask leak. Men can put Vaseline on a moustache and smooth the hair down.

SPIT! Before you enter the water, spit into the mask, rub this around the lenses, then give it a quick rinse just before you put it on. This will prevent the mask fogging up.

Breathing Use your mouth only; breathing out through your nose will force the mask away from your face and make it leak. A little water in your mask doesn't matter. It's easier to practice with the mask and snorkel alone at first, without the fins. It sometimes takes a couple of tries to overcome your brain's certainty that you can't breathe with your face in the water; persevere and breathe slowly.

Finning Keep your knees as straight as possible so that most of the movement comes from the hips (like a sexy walk!). Ankles and toes should be relaxed; holding on with your toes gives you cramp. Practice by swimming on your back; your knees should not break the surface. Then try the same thing on your front. Try to keep your hands by your side.

Getting water out of the mask and snorkel Look up, pull the bottom of the mask off your face, and let it drain out. If you dive, or dip your head under the surface, water is going to go into the snorkel; just blow it out (like Flipper!) or lift your head a little, take the mouthpiece out of your mouth, and give it a shake. Remember it's only water, not acid; if in doubt; SWALLOW!

RELAX! Swim to where you want to be, hang in the water and float. Once you are quiet and not moving, fish will come out of hiding, and will soon be swimming around under you. Fish ID books are available in the reference library in the lounge area.
