Ships have been linked to Australian history through an umbilical cord. And so have been shipwrecks. Sail by the coasts of Australia, and you are sure to find one or two submerged hulks peeping out of the ocean surface. Sail by the North East coast, and chances are you will join the host of submerged hulks in the Great Barrier Reef, a magical stretch of ocean that has brought down many. There are many enchanting and romantic tales of such bravado, ill-fate, or sheer pig-headedness around such wrecks. This is one such.

Early in 20th century, 1911 to be precise, Magnetic Island was a rising centre of commerce. Doctor McCabe had a lavish paradise, aptly named Arcadia, where his rich female friends and acquaintances could visit. It was also the high time for bloomers and hooped skirts. The windy bay was precarious to the womens modesty and Doctor McCabe, a dentist by profession, wanted to indulge the dignity of the women. He decided to install a breakwater, thus softening the windy ambience so threatening to his female friends. The idea was to tug along Moltke, an 827 ton vessel that had seen better days, which had ran aground on a reef at the northern end of Flinders Passage, between Townsville and Cape Bowling Green.

Our doctor brought in a local bloke who claimed some expertise in explosives. They attached the Moltke to a tugboat, planning to blow the explosives on the Moltke when it was situated properly to act as a breakwater for Arcadias jetty, the prospective abode of our modest ladies. Our explosive bloke lit the fuse a little bit too soon, and seeing this tug-boat skipper cut the rope leaving Moltke on its own. To make virtue out of a situation gone hilariously wrong, the bloke and the doctor jump against an impressive firework, and they survive to drill and fill another day. Moltke went straight in the wrong place, and in shallow water.

She did provide a sheltered anchorage for small crafts for many years, although she was no use as a breakwater for McCabe's jetty, and the merry citizens of Magnetic Island still remember the day a dentist blew the Moltke away. Today, many ferry services carry tourists to a concrete ramp only hundred metres away from where the Moltke gloriously sank.

The stretches around the Great Barrier Reef is the graveyard of many more such glorious wreckages. A little further away from where Moltke sank, is the remains of another vessel called Maria but it is another nice tale to be told another day. Lieutenant James Cook famously came along this route only, and discovered an island continent. In his train he brought criminal inmates, plundering gold prospectors, and todays tourists. They come, they see, and they leave with enchanting tales of submerged hulks peeping out of historical times, shaking hands with a precarious present.

Magnetic Island lies off Townsville. It is well connected by ferries from the mainland. Unless you plan to stay in Townsville you may stay in nearby Cairns (about 300 kms), and make a day trip to Townsville. And while you are in Cairns, you lavish the charms of Ellisbeach Bungalows.

After a day on the slopes, sometimes people wants to just kick back and relax at the lodge, or visit one of the taverns in the area. For the younger crowd, there is a great game room located right in the center of the town. One of the great things about Red River is that everything is within walking distance of the lodging areas, and shuttles are provided for transportation to and from the slopes.

Algonquin is within a few hours driving distance from Toronto. Leave on a Friday afternoon and drive north, take the canoe and camp on a site of one of the lakes closer to the highway. Early spring when the snow melts, the water will rush down small, normally quiet streams and give you a chance to do some white water kayaking or canoeing in areas where you normally have to portage during summer. For the more daring you can enjoy the high tempo ride of rapids and whitewater thrills on the Ottawa River.

5Mountain biking, summer adventure

It is incredible that within a one to two hour drive of a full-feature city like Reno, Nevada, there are more than a dozen world-class ski resorts. Add the attraction of gambling casinos, fabulous restaurants and showrooms and you have a winter vacation destination at Lake Tahoe that is second-to-none.

If you are in Reno for a visit to a casino or on a business trip, it is a very simple to just rent a car or hop on a shuttle bus down to Lake Tahoe and enjoy a day of awesome skiing with absolutely breathtaking views of the lake from the snow covered slopes.

In the South Lake Tahoe area you will find a little piece of skiing heaven called, appropriately, Heavenly. This beautiful and massive ski resorts' lower slopes can be seen from the Stateline/South Lake Tahoe highways and from most of the lake itself. Many people consider Heavenly to be one of the most spectacular ski areas on the planet.

Heavenly opened in 1955 with only one chair lift and a small hut on U.S. Forest Service land. Today it covers over 4,800 acres and is literally a massive operation. The resort was purchased in the spring of 2002 by Vail Resorts Inc. who has pumped over $36 million in on-mountain capital to improve and upgrade the site. Enhanced snowmaking on 70% of all mountain trails, expanded grooming, outstanding terrain parks, new signage and access to tree skiing are just a few of the improvements that have been made.

The ski season at Heavenly runs roughly from mid-November to late April. The vertical drop is 3,500 feet and the top elevation is 10,067 feet. The mountain spans California where the base elevation is at 6,540 feet and Nevada where the base elevation is at 7,200 feet. Annual snowfall is 360 inches on average but they had 480 inches during the 2004-2005 season.

The resort has 30 lifts, 15 in California and 15 in Nevada, highlighted by an eight-person gondola and an aerial tram. As far as skiing goes, the mountain offers something for everyone. 35% of trails are rated expert/advanced; 45%are intermediate; and 20% are beginner.

Heavenly has a veritable cornucopia of additional amenities and close access to all the lodging, shopping, dining, recreational, entertainment and fitness facilities that you could possibly imagine. It is truly a fantastic resort.

At the north end of the lake we find Squaw Valley USA, the site of the 1960 Winter Olympics. It was founded in 1949 amidst 8,000 acres of wilderness preserve in the California High Sierra. Today it boasts over 4,000 acres over six Sierra peaks.

Squaw Valley offers skiers a unique experience since there are literally thousands of acres of open bowl skiing as opposed to the trails that most people (especially Easterners) are accustomed to. Skiing in wide-open bowls in consistently deep snow allows skiers of all levels to kick their skill sets up a notch. There are 16 open bowls to choose from and over 100 runs that are serviced by 33 lifts. The terrain is rated at 25% beginner, 45% intermediate and 30% expert.

The area receives over 450 inches of snowfall annually and boasts one of the most advanced and sophisticated grooming operations around. Three terrain parks and two half pipes round out the operation to include something for everyone. The summit is 9,050 feet with a base of 6,200 feet, making the vertical an impressive 2,850 feet.

Squaw Valley, like Heavenly, offers close proximity to the Lake Tahoe area with all the added attractions and amenities. An absolutely world-class resort, you also have the additional perk of skiing down slopes once graced by Olympic athletes.

These are only two of the many world-class ski resorts in the Lake Tahoe region but they clearly give an indication of the fine facilities that are available. Whether youre leaving the city heading to the Mammoth Mountain/Lake Tahoe High Sierra country for its beauty and relaxation, or planning that ski trip from Scottsdale to Snowbowl, here are some tips for a safe and pleasant journey. Be sure to see also Part 2: Dont get in Trouble, but if you do -.

Driving in winter conditions tests your car to the limit. If something isn't working properly under the best conditions it certainly isn't going to work when it's cold and stormy.

Check weather and travel conditions before heading out. Don't take chances if the weather is bad. Dont drive when there are whiteouts, freezing rain or blizzards. Leave early to allow extra time to get to your destination. Buckle up; always use your belt. This means all passengers and children, too.

Whenever starting your car, make sure that there is nothing obstructing the tailpipe, and never warm up your car in a closed garage.

If you feel tired, pull off the road and rest!

Check engine oil, especially before long trips. Use winter weight (5W-30) or all-season oil.

Check tire pressure, tire condition, and spare tire pressure regularly. Tires lose on the average 1 pound per month through normal leakage.

Inspect the belts and hoses to be sure they are free from frays, cracks, leaks or rotted rubber. Make sure that radiator hose clamps are tight in order to prevent leaks at the connections.

Be sure all lights are in good working order, and that your brakes, windshield wipers, defroster, heater and exhaust system are in top condition.

Have a mechanic check the battery and charging system. Keep battery terminals clean, tight, free of corrosion, and dry. If you find that you need a new battery, get the biggest that will fit in your car.

Keep the windshield and windows clear. Change to winter wiper blades, which are made for driving in snow. Check windshield washer fluid level. Its a good idea to keep some extra fluid in the trunk in case you run out. Make sure you get fluid appropriate for the lowest temperature you will experience.

Check coolant level and mixture. Make certain the antifreeze will protect your car to the lowest winter temperature you'll be exposed to where you will be driving.

Keep the gas tank as full as possible. It may be necessary to change routes or turn back during a bad storm, or you may be caught in a traffic delay. If you get stranded, the engine will be your only source of heat. (Make sure you keep a window open a crack if you're sitting there with the engine running.)

Always keep an updated map of your route, an extra car key in your pocket, and a cell phone and small change or a calling card for a payphone.

Its a good idea to keep a winter survival kit in your vehicle: blanket, hats, boots, gloves, change of clothing, small broom, ice scraper, small snow shovel, towel, flashlight, batteries, kitty litter or burlap for traction, jumper cables, a tool kit, tire chains, a properly inflated spare tire, wheel wrench and tripod-type jack. Additional items for the trunk include a Help sign to put in your window, brightly-colored cloth, a compass, first aid kit, wooden matches in a waterproof container, scissors, string, and canned food along with a can opener.

Always carry chains. Sandbags in the trunk over the rear axle will provide better traction in rear wheel vehicles. Use winter tires. They improve driving safety by providing better traction and handling through snow, slush, and on ice, but never mix tires of different tread, size and construction. Because of winter's lower temperatures, the air pressure in tires will drop. Check tires after driving a short distance to warm them up for an accurate reading. Adding air to cold tires can result in over-inflated tires when they warm up.

It can take ten times longer to stop in icy conditions than on a dry road. Don't get overconfident with four-wheel drive. Four-wheel drive helps you get going quicker but it won't help you stop any faster. Drive slowly, allowing extra room to slow down and stop. Use the highest gear possible to avoid wheel spin. Maneuver gently, avoiding harsh braking and acceleration.

If your car is equipped with anti-lock brakes, do not pump them. To avoid skids, brake carefully and gently on snow or ice. Squeeze your brakes in slow, steady strokes. Allow the wheels to keep rolling. If they start to lock up, ease off the brake pedal. As you slow down, you may also want to shift gently into a lower gear.

Be careful when approaching shaded areas, bridges, and overpasses, as these sections of road freeze much sooner in cold weather and stay frozen long after the sun has risen. Don't use your cruise control or overdrive when it's freezing (or colder). Even roads that appear clear can have isolated slippery spots and the quick touch of your brakes to deactivate cruise control can cause you to lose control of your vehicle. With overdrive, as you encounter a hill your vehicle automatically accelerates or downshifts, which can cause loss of traction.

So, whether youre to stay at an Aspen resort and spa or luxury Vail hotel, theres much more involved than just finding discounted hotel accommodations; be sure to plan a safe and pleasant trip!

What do you do if you have a family vacation to Keystone, Colorado scheduled this winter and have a baby or toddler to entertain? You can still could enjoy winter activities with a little one if you follow these tips.

Since our son was born two years ago, we have invited friends and family to come along nearly every time we go to Keystone Colorado for some winter adventures and skiing. The first time we did this, we rented a one bedroom condo that slept 4 comfortably, reasoning that two little babies wouldnt take up much space. We were smart enough to know NEVER to do that again!

Traveling with a baby means traveling with all of the babies things. We had two pack and plays, two strollers, etc. This meant our ski bags stayed in the car and our ski jackets and ski gear was frozen in the morning. Since then, we have opted for a condo at Keystone Resort that sleeps more people than we need. This way, two babies can be put in separate rooms and the chances that they will wake each other, or you, are decreased by a huge factor.

Another thing to consider when booking your vacation to Keystone Colorado is the availability of baby equipment. Anybody who has flown with a baby in tow knows that keeping the baby happy while traveling is enough of a challenge without also trying to cart around a pack and play, high chair, stroller, toys and baby back pack. Ask the property manager if your ski condo is equipped with the items you will need, or if there is a place in town where these things can be rented. Many times the property manager will gladly provide these extra items for a slight additional cost. When you consider how hard it is to bring everything with you, it's a small price to pay.

If you do have access to a baby back pack and are willing to divert from downhill skiing or other extreme sports for a day or two, consider cross-country skiing or snowshoeing with your baby. You will burn many more calories with all of the added weight, and your child will get a taste of a Keystone Colorado winter day. You can ski and snowshoe the groomed or packed trails of the Keystone Nordic Center. The trail fee, at $9.00 per person is a fraction of the cost of lift tickets.

Tubing is also an adventure to consider. We have found that nothing excites our little boy like sliding down the hill on a tube with Mom or Dad at Keystone Resort. The tubing hill is has a gentle slope, so it is easy to navigate and the kids can still walk up the hill on their own. What better way to guarantee a nice long afternoon nap than playing on the hill all morning? At only $12 per hour per tube, this is also an affordable family alternative to downhill skiing. An hour is about anyone can handle by the way.

Dont forget the great fireworks display that Keystone Resort puts on every Saturday night. In the summertime, it is held at the Lakeside Village in Keystone. During the winter months, the fireworks are shot off at the base of River Run Village in Keystone. The little ones will be delighted about the fireworks that can be seen from nearly everywhere in Keystone. Unlike summertime fireworks, they might even still be awake to see the whole show!

Have a great time in Keystone and dont be afraid to try something new with your children. Before you travel, make sure all the baby or child equipment can be provide for you. Especially when carting ski gear, this will save you from having to carry twice as much stuff.

There are four main options to consider when you are considering a trip to the heart of the mountainous American Midwest for a fun-filled time at an Aspen ski resort.

The oldest Aspen ski resort is on Ajax Mountain. It all began for this place in 1947 when the longest lift in the world at that time was perched upon its slopes. This destination has only bettered itself with age. It is not the place for the beginner, really. About half of its slopes for intermediates and the rest are for experts. This is the ideal place to visit if you have some able skiers mixing with some novices who want either to challenge themselves or just feel like they are challenging themselves.

Next door to this Aspen ski resort is the Aspen Highlands. This hill has half expert runs as well, but offers more for the beginner. This is the kind of place you could spend days, with over 130 runs to its name. The Highlands might have derived their name from the 790 acre spread and the 3645 foot vertical. Good thing you dont have to walk or rope-tow your way to the top! There are three high speed quadruple chairs and one triple chair to take you where you want to go.

If beginner skiing or snowboarding is what youre after, then big doesnt necessarily mean better. The 420 acres of Buttermilk Mountain have been designed to facilitate two types of people: Snowboarders and Starters. Considering the relative newness of the snowboard trend, there are a lot that are both. This Aspen ski resort has the longest terrain park on the globe, stretching over 2 miles and containing over 25 rails. If you are going to strap a single board to your feet on this trip, youve got to hit the Buttermilk.

The fourth main Aspen ski resort is actually 12 miles from the city itself. Snowmass is over 3000 acres of winter pleasure. Reaching 4500 feet into the sky, the Snowmass has 84 runs, many of which can take as long to get down as it takes to drive out from the city. If you plan to hit this hill a lot you may want to find an inn closer to the area. Of course, when you are debating which of these hills to spend most of your time at, the proximity of them all to one another makes the lodging choices less crucial.

The good news about all these choices is that you can get lift passes which allow you access to all four resorts. The amount of research you put into your preparations can really help make your holiday go smoother, but its nice to know that you pretty much cant go wrong.

Climate and weather

The summer months, from October to April, are often very hot, humid and rainy. From April to September, the winter months are cooler, drier and more comfortable for visitors not accustomed to heat and humidity normally associated with the warm season in tropical areas.

That's not to say that you shouldn't embark on Mozambique travel during summer though, since actual temperatures and rainfall varies by region within the country. The higher-lying Nampula and Niassa provinces are the coolest, while the north-eastern coastal regions are the hottest. The northern region receives far more rainfall than the south.

If you're hoping for a Mozambican safari experience, the best time of year to visit is towards the end of the winter months. This drier season normally sees animals congregating in larger groups than they do in summer. The summer months offer excellent fishing opportunities with the larger fish populating the coastal waters during this time of the year.

Diving in Mozambique

Mozambique is a world-famous dive location with numerous fantastic reefs supporting an amazing variety of marine life. The relatively warm water temperature and a multitude of interesting creatures including the dugong, sharks, dolphins, whales and shoals colourful fish, makes for an awesome diving experience.

The area most popular amongst diving enthusiasts is the Bazaruto Archipelago, consisting of four islands; Bazaruto, Benguerra, Margaruque and Santa Carolina. The archipelago's coral reefs and clear, crystal blue waters provide what is regarded as the best snorkelling and scuba diving in Africa. If your trip to Mozambique is to be limited to just one destination in the country, then this group of islands must be it.

Currency

The unit of currency is the Metical. Introduced mid-2006, this relatively new currency is used alongside the older Meticais, which is being phased out. In the southern parts of the country, the South African Rand, US Dollars and Pounds Sterling are also accepted. In the north, US Dollars and Pounds Sterling are widely accepted.Credit cards are accepted to some extent, but only by the larger hotels or businesses geared specifically towards tourists. Generally, it should be assumed that your credit card will not be readily accepted.

Health Precautions

Mozambique is a malaria-risk area, so it's vital that visitors take proper precautions. To minimise the mosquito risk, travellers are advised to wear long sleeves and trousers when possible and to use an effective mosquito repellent on exposed skin.Treated mosquito netting should be used and the doors and windows of your accommodation should be screened to keep mosquitoes out. A fan or air-conditioner can also help limit night-time mosquito activity to some extent.

Also important is the use of and effective anti-malaria medication. Be warned though, certain medications cause side-effects, so consult you doctor or travel clinic well before you intend to be exposed to the risk to ensure that you are adequately protected.

With a painful history of war and destruction, Mozambique has rebuilt itself and looks to the future by capitalising on its natural beauty. Whether you are after an adventure, leisure or the perfect eco-tourism experience, Mozambique is an idyllic tropical destination that will not disappoint. It is truly a slice of paradise.

Dubai is a celebrated, rich and famous land. So is Burj Al Arab, the world's tallest and most lavish hotel on its soil. Both are unparalleled leaders in their own spheres. If Dubai is the monarch of free-trade and infrastructure in the new millennium, then so is Burj Al Arab the lord of hotel industry. They both are unconquered celebrities. One provides the entire world an opportunity to be successful. While the other, one of the best architectural wonders of all times, displays its grandeur and artistry at the Gulf sea coast.

Measuring 321 m above the seabed, where it was constructed on a small man-made island, the hotel is arguably a very mammoth structure. Hostelling is a great way to travel if you are on a tight budget. Popular with college students who tour Europe, hostelling offers low budget and low luxury accommodations for those that don't mind bunking up and sharing with other travelers.

This method of travel can offer adventure and the chance to meet different people but is not for everyone. It's great for the solo traveler or group of young people but families with small children and couples who want a romantic vacation should spring for more private accommodation's.

Most hostels are set up as dormitory style rooms, with a number of bunk beds arranged throughout the room. The number of bunk beds in a single room varies, with the average from four to ten bunks per room. Each traveler is assigned a specific bunk upon check-in.

Almost all hostels in the United States divide their accommodations according to gender, with the female guests in one block of rooms and the male guests in another. In multi-floor hostels, each gender is often assigned a specific floor or group of floors.

In Europe and other locations throughout the world, you may find hostels with mixed gender rooms. If you don't feel comfortable bunking with members of the opposite sex, then make sure you inquire as to the arrangements before you settle in.

The bathroom accommodations at hostels vary as well, with some rooms containing a shared bathroom and shower, while other hostels will have shower and bathroom facilities located in the hallway. If this is an important consideration, you should make sure to ask about bathroom facilities when making the reservation.

Although hostelling is a very informal way to travel, you do need to make reservations especially during the summer. The main appeal of staying at hostels, of course, is the price. The nightly rate for a hostel rarely rises above $25 or $30 per night, with most hostel accommodations costing far less. With the average hotel room hovering around $100 to $150 in many locations, it is easy to see why hostels are becoming so popular.

In addition, the staff at most hostels are extremely accommodating and knowledgeable about the local area. Unlike many staff members of some luxury hotels, who travel in from the suburbs and rarely see the city in which the live, hostel staff tend to live in their city, and they have an intimate knowledge of the local attractions, including which attractions are cant miss and which ones are a waste of money.

In addition, hostels often have access to discounts and coupons for local area attractions and restaurants, and they can provide valuable information on the best, lowest priced restaurants in the area.

Hostel accommodation's won't please everyone and certainly aren't for every vacation but they can be great lodging for the budget minded tourist. If your main goal is to go out and seek new adventures and places to see and you care less about luxurious accommodation's then hostels will allow you to save money on lodging so that you can spend more on your travel destinations and experiences.

It took him eight years to master plan a neighboring ski resort, Solitude, and its new village created in the manner of a sensitive, intimate, and European Alpine village.

As the only development allowed in Big Cottonwood Canyon of Solitude, the village is unique with quaint shops, exquisite dining, and comfortable lodging with first class service and amenities. Today, the area is covered with skiers, but less in number than the historical miners. Now owned by a different family, the resort features 1,200 acres of 63 trails for beginners, intermediate skiers, and experts. There are eight lifts, including seven chair lifts and one surface lift. The top elevation at Solitude Mountain is 10,036 feet, with a vertical drop of 2,048 feet.

One of the shops in the village, Sone Haus - the Village Store, located in the heart of the village, features a grass roof while serving a quick lunch, specialty coffee, or an ice cream treat. When the weather is nice, a day hike can turn into hours of meandering along trails. It's easy to run out of water. I've even forgotten to repack my water bottle after taking a break. Streams and ponds may be everywhere, but don't be tempted. You have no idea if that water is safe to drink.

Potable water is available if you know what to look for.

Water follows shelter in the sacred order of wilderness survival.

1. Graze on Grass. In North America there are no toxic grasses. You can chew grass blades, extract the moisture and then spit out the pulp.

2. Grape Vine to the Rescue. You're in luck if you recognize grape vine; the liquid from a cut vine is also potable. Replant the severed vine, so it can sprout roots.

3. Make a Solar Tree Branch Still. Wrap a piece of plastic (like the plastic bag holding your trail mix) around the green leaves on a tree branch. The moisture that forms from the condensation is safe to drink.

4. Dew Wiping. If there's dew or moisture on non-poisonous plants, wipe that moisture with a cotton cloth for another safe source of water.

Dew wiping and a the solar still are the main reason I carry plastic bags and a cotton bandana as part of my pocket survival kit. These two techniques will give you drinkable water in any location with nonpoisonous vegetation.

The advantage of these water collecting techniques is that you don't have to boil the water. It's a good idea to practice these techniques before you need to put them to use.

There are a myriad of other ways to obtain drinking water, but you need more tools. You also need a bit more technique to be successful.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Never eat snow in a survival situation. Your body will lose moisture trying to melt the snow, leaving your more dehydrated. You need to add water to snow before drinking it.

This article is not intended to be an exhaustive examination of water collecting and purification, but rather to help you understand how to use condensation to your advantage when you are in a pinch.

Out of the many Caribbean and Bahamian islands my wife and I have visited, Eleuthera is by far the longest and skinniest island we have seen -- it is also one of the nicest. At approximately 100 miles long and a several miles wide, Eleuthera offers a rare combination of beauty, charm, ruggedness and tranquility. Within an hour's time, you can view the deep blue color of the Atlantic from towering coral cliffs, wade in the rich turquoise waters looking for seashells, or go spelunking in a cave filled with multicolored stalactites and stalagmites.

Even better, Eleuthera has miles and miles of pink sand beaches that will simply knock your eyes out. Does this sound like an exaggeration? Trust me, it's not. These are the same type of pink sand beaches you would find at the fabled, and expensive, Harbour Island which is located just off the northeast tip of Eleuthera. These beaches were also good enough for Club Med at one time -- that was until hurricane Floyd in 1999 destroyed the facilities. Club Med chose not to rebuild and packed their bags. The nice thing is the beach is still there and is as gorgeous as ever. Even nicer is the fact there are so few people there making it by far one of the most pristine and tranquil beaches we have seen.

And then there is the charm of Eleuthera. Unlike some of the Bahamian islands we have seen, Eleuthera is not over developed -- if anything it is underdeveloped. You get the feeling of time and endurance as you tour the island. One of the more historical places to visit is Preacher's Cave on the north end of Eleuthera. This cave is where Captain William Sayles and a group of Puritans sought shelter after finding the island. The cave and surrounding area is currently being turned into a historical park. At the entrance of the old cave is a large rock with a plaque that says William Sayle ship wrecked at Devil's Backbone found refuge here. Sermons held 100 years. When standing in the cave, the presence of the adventurers' spirits is palatable.

With any number of the towns on Eleuthera, such as Governor's Harbour, you can see the effect the ocean has had on so many of the historical homes and buildings. It kind of reminds you of what it is like to walk down the street of an old Western town; only the motif is stone and sand surrounded by water. Of course, there are some more modern facilities, but not near enough to take away from the overall atmosphere. You definitely won't find Whoppers being served here.

From the quaint Bahamian towns to the hard packed pink sand beaches, we then visit The Cliffs of Eleuthera and we learn a new term: ogue waves. Imagine standing on a virtually sheer cliff a hundred plus feet above the ocean and watching the water pound on the rock face below. You feel perfectly safe and removed from the ocean's display of brute force... that is until a rogue wave hits the cliff wall and jumps up over your head dumping hundreds of gallons of sea water on you and your poor camera. This is immediately followed with a scream What was that? Since there are no reefs to break the water coming into the cliffs, the right wave breaking at the right angle produces a water show that even the Bellagio can not match.

When staying on an island like Eleuthera, we prefer renting vacation homes or villas. There is a wide variety of vacation rentals; some considered luxury while others are asic and affordable. Many of these house and villa rentals can be rented directly from their property owners -- a number of which have their own websites on the internet. You may also seek the assistance of a local real estate agent. When looking for that perfect rental home, it is a good idea to ask to see photos, get a detailed description of the rental property, and find out exactly where it is located so you know what is in its proximity. Be sure to ask about their deposit and refund policies.

Eleuthera Island is ideal for any number of typical island activities including fishing for bonefish, surfing, shelling, kayaking, boating, diving, snorkeling and swimming. Did I forget to mention lying in a lounge chair sitting under a beach umbrella and sipping a cold Kalik? Make mine Eleuthera, please.

Whistler is known as a resort with extremely extensive terrain and the highest vertical drop in North America (over one vertical mile from the top of the Blackcomb Glacier down to Whistler Village. It is also known for a wide variety of ski-in, ski-out accommodation. However, potential visitors should be aware that not all ski-in, ski-out accommodation is created equal. For those who do not know Whistler well, here is a brief overview of the major slopeside developments on the lower slopes of Blackcomb Mountain.

On the Blackcomb side, the largest lodge is The Aspens. Over 300 one and two-bedroom apartments, a large swimming pool and several outdoor hot tubs, plus a large and comfortable lobby, a ski rental/tuning shop and several other onsite facilities comprise the Aspens complex. It is right on the edge of the slopes and just a 20 second ski down to the Blackcomb Base. For easy access to skiing, there is nowhere better than the Aspens. However the apartments in the Aspens are fairly small (the two-bedroom units are around 850 sq. ft.) and often furnished in a Spartan fashion. One or two have been extensively upgraded, and these are the ones to go for.

Next to the Aspens, and also equipped with a pool and hot tubs, is Greystone Lodge. Some people prefer Greystone Lodge since it is smaller and less like staying in a large amorphous hotel, and its proximity to the slopes is almost equal.

If you need a larger unit, a little further up the hill is Woodrun Lodge. This is a cut or two above the Aspens, and has units of up to 4 bedrooms and 1800 sq. ft. Go for one of these if you are a larger group and want to all be in the same place. However, the truly premium building on the North side of the Wizard run is Cedar Creek. A beautiful building, with very few units in the rental market, this is the crme de la crme of multi-unit ski-in, ski-out complexes in Whistler.

At the bottom of the Wizard are a couple of popular buildings which are very convenient: the Le Chamois Hotel: really a glorified apartment building, and Glacier Lodge. These contain a variety of accommodation right at the Blackcomb Base

On the other southern side of the Wizard lies Pinnacle Ridge. Pinnacle Ridge is a townhome with over 40 units, some of which are a lost closer to the slopes than others. Also, some have been extensively upgraded (sometimes to the tune of over $1m in renovations), while others are totally original (read: cheap fittings and drab dcor). Further over again, and a little lower, are Cedar Ridge and Cedar Hollow. Of the two, Cedar Ridge is somewhat closer to the slopes (but they are both pretty close), whilst Cedar Hollow has the edge in design and interior space. Cedar Hollow and Cedar Ridge have the great advantage that you can ski down to the top of the Village, not just to the base of Blackcomb: this gives you the option of skiing up Whistler as well as Blackcomb mountain.

Further down from Cedar Ridge and Cedar Hollow lies Snowy Creek, often considered the best location in Whistler, since uniquely in Whistler it combines ski-in, ski-out with just a two-minute walk to the Village. Again, the Snowy Creek homes vary greatly in attractiveness, since the ones which havent been renovated are fairly grim. However, due to their proximity to the Village, these are some of the most sought-after units in town.

So if you are looking for ski-in, ski-out accommodation in Whistler make sure you understand exactly what you are getting.

The Super Falcon chair lift in Breckenridge, CO opened in 1985, this made peak 10 the third mountain to be opened at Breckenridge Ski Resort. Peak 10's double black terrain is plentiful. All the extreme double diamond terrain is on the south side of the mountain. With great runs like mustang which offers moguls, trees and more. The top part of Mustang is relatively flat, but don't be fooled. This flat part suddenly drops into the steep part of the mountain.

Towards the end of the run, there is huge natural hit and the landing is perfect but be careful not to go to big or else you will land of the flat. After the hit make sure you get enough speed for the cat walk. If you snowboard, beware, the traverse to the lift can be exhausting. There are five other double black runs on the southside all are pretty similar to Mustang with steeps and mogels. Quiver, Elan, Trinity, Black Hawk and Darkrider will challenge even the most experienced skier.

If you're riding the Southside don't forget about the brilliant Cimmaron ski run. If you like speed with a lot of rollers, You'll love Cimmaron. This ski run has a giant slalom feel to it with good reason. They actually hold world cup races on this run. Once you pick up speed with this run, you'll have a much easier traverse at the bottom. The southside is the absolute best on a powder day, but I recommend you avoid the double black runs on sunny days.

The north side of peak 10 has less vertical than the south side, but the north side has two of the greatest tree or mogel runs in Corsair and the Burn. Corsair is a little steeper than the burn, and it also has a tighter trees, but if you want to get the most bang for the buck, try starting at corsair and traverse skiers right and I promise you a long fresh run. When you pull up to the corsair mogul run, go left into the trees and I promise it all opens up into an amazing powder field.

The Burn is just below Corsair and offers wide open tree runs with absolultely perfect spacing of the trees. If you keep going to the right side when coming down the Burn, your run will be much longer.

One more run worth mentioning is the Crystal. This runs straight down the middle under the Falcon Chair. This run is a great run for an intermediate skiers looking to take that next step towards being a more aggressive skier. As a warning and tip, if you happen to be riding Breckenridge on a Saturday or Sunday, the lift lines can get extremely long. So my advice to you is to tryout peak10 early in the morning and by 10:30am, you can go to other lifts on Peak 9 or Peak 8 and there won't be much of a line.
