Use lip balm to keep the lips moisturized.

If you are wearing makeup, do not remove it before rest. It keeps the skin from losing moisture in the flight.

Walk around constantly whenever possible to improve blood circulation. This will avoid DVT (Deep Vein Thrombosis).

7. Lots of people recommend the cheapest inside cabin, because you won't be spending much time in there anyway. This might betrue for short trips, but are you prepared for an inside cabin on the lowest level.

8. Know your location. Cabin, balcony size, and cabin location vary significantly within the same price range on any ship.

9. There's lot of cruise industry jargon you have to decipher.

10. Yes, there are the obvious questions you should ask: Will I located below the water line? Will I hear the roar of the shipsengines from my cabin? Will I have enough room to turn around in my cabin? Will it be the size of a walk-in closet, with nowindows, a tiny bath, and bunk beds? Will I not be able to tell if it's day or night without going up several decks?

Explore what the different types of cabins are, which locations are the most desirable, and which locations you should avoid ifpossible. Pick the right accommodations and you'll have a wonderful time, and get hooked on cruising.

HOW TO GET HERE

By plane

Qantas run scheduled flights from most major Australian cities to Alice Springs.Alice Airport is still 450+km from the rock - so don't jump in a cab and say Uluru! - you'll need a mortgage to pay the fare!Quantas can also fly you to Connellan Airport - which is much closer to Uluru - but accommodation is limited here, so it's best to book both your flight and your accommodation well in advance.

By train

The journey to Alice by train is highly recommended - if you have the time. The legendary Ghan runs twice a week right across Australia from Adelaide to Darwin with Alice-Springs bang in the middle! Book early and get a sleeper.

By road

The drive to Alice is long and arduous!It is not a trip for the faint-hearted or the easily bored. Landmarks (and fuel stops) are few and far between, accommodation is hit and miss, and breaking down can be a nightmare. To put things into perspective, Uluru is, by Aussie standards, just up the road from Alice - but it still takes five hours by car!

FROM ALICE-SPRINGS

By car

The Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park is 465 km (five hours on the road). Rental cars are plentiful in Alice but I recommend that you rent a well known company, and book early.

By Coach

There are countless coach and bus companies running trips from Alice to Uluru. Some of them are very good, and some of them are not! Check the online travel blogs to get some idea of what is available.

WHEN TO COME

If you don't like it too hot - avoid the high summer months Dec, Jan, Feb. Otherwise - any time is a good time!

Of course, you'll need to bring any medications that you are on your trip but you also should bring any over-the-counter medicines they think you might need. if you have allergies and you are traveling to a place that you think might trigger them then bring some allergy medicine. If you will be outdoors a lot in the warm leather, you might consider insect repellent.

6. Security

You want to make sure that your luggage is secure by locking it. However, you might want to be sure to bring a spare key in case you lose the one that opens your case.

7. Tote Bags

Bring a large tote bag with you on the trip, packed in a suitcase. This bag can double as a tote when you are running around during the day and might be purchasing items. And then you can use it as additional luggage on your trip home to house souvenirs.

8. Know Where You Are Going

It's a good idea to map out your trip ahead of time especially if you have several spots you want to hit during vacation. If you going to be traveling around in your own, It's a good idea to get a map of the area so that you don't get lost.

9. Insurance

Sometimes, on a trip it's a lot easier to take public transportation but in some places that might not be convenient. If you going to be renting a car you should make sure that you get insurance. Does your suitcase look just like someone else's? Chances are it does! And that's why it's a good idea to have labels both on the outside and the inside of your luggage. You might want to write only your name though, and not your address to be on the safe side. If your luggage does get lost the airline will have your address and be able to return it to you, you might not want every stranger and airport to know where you live.

I have a confession to make. Im a recovering boatasexual. You dont know what that is? Thats when your most significant other is a boat. Trust me, folks - this is a toxic relationship!

It is said that the happiest days of a boat owners life are the day she buys a boat, and the day she sells it. Truer words were never spoken. It has also been said that owning a boat is like standing in a cold shower tearing up $20 bills. This is not true. Youre tearing up $100 bills, at least.

All my friends were shopping madly, all over town, buying clothes, shoes, furniture. I was at Home Depot melting my Visa card on stuff like stainless steel piano hinge. Wood plugs. Router bits. I do have every power tool known to God and Bob Vila, so Tim Allen, kiss mykeel. I was committed to this relationship. Committed? I was certifiable I lived on my boat. And what a harsh house-mother she was, too.

As you read this, raise your arms so your hands are close together, right over your head. Keep them there for four hours. Every spring, I was forced to do this for days at a time. Holding a ten pound grinder. Carpal tunnel? I had the entire carpal subway system.

Every task I undertook involved a toxic chemical. My life became an EPA Superfund site. Most of the containers had a warning label that said A brain tumor in every can now thats what I call a warning label!

The first summer I had the boat I was determined to practice safe boating I wore a TyVek suit when I was painting her. Have you ever worn a TyVek suit? When it was 100 degrees? Its like being locked in a sauna for hours at a time. I did lose 10 pounds that summer, though - in addition to about a billion brain cells from the paint fumes.

The entire relationship was co-dependent. The boat wanted to dissolve like an aspirin, and I had to prevent it from dissolving like an aspirin. Bit by bit, the boat was winning. The teak decks leaked no matter how many times I re-caulked them. The engine developed multiple personality disorder. The lines would fray even if they were coiled up in the rope locker. The fenders deflated. Then she tried to throw me overboard the lifeline stanchions on the starboard side all broke at the same time.

This was a fight to the finish.

It was that old relationship conundrum - divorce? Never! Murder? Quite possibly. The boat did have reason to wish me harm I HAD grounded her within fifteen minutes of our first voyage together. And there were the groundings in the Piankatank River, Boston Harbor, Rockaway Bay, and Sandy Hook.

She harbored a grudge.

And after everything I did for her, too.

I gave her a complete makeover from top to bottom I rewired and painted her mast, I replaced her batteries and rewired the cabin, I completely redid her hull with the BEST isophthalic polyester-resin (say that three times fast) I gave her all of my spare time and more than all of my spare cash. I even bought her jewelry new rudder fittings made of silicon bronze that cost over $2,000. Ive never spent that much on jewelry for myself!

We had wonderful adventures together trips to Marthas Vineyard, Nantucket and Cape Cod. We sailed up the Hudson River and down the coast to Cape May.

But it was never enough. She always needed, demanded more.

The end finally came one day in November of 2000 Id given all I could give. Id reached the end of my rope, and my checkbook.

Id reached the second happiest day of my life I sold her to a family that fell in love with her at first sight.

The poor slobs.

As I watched her sail away, I felt a twinge of sadness. Then I thought of my checkbook, which now had a positive balance. A VERY positive balance!

Ive heard that my former significant other is still up to her old tricks it took her new owners almost a month to get her from Long Island Sound to Gaylesville, Maryland. The engines multiple personality disorder kicked in, and the mainsail did its look at me! Im shredding! trick - but her new owners are determined to keep her happy. I hope they have a fat checkbook shes a hungry old girl.

So Im single again but Im a hopeless romantic. Im eyeing charter boats in the Caribbean.

They also allow the moisture and condensation from your breath to carry outside because these backpacking tents are ventilated. This means that you can avoid wet tent walls in the morning. The vestibule is another handy, common feature that allows you to leave your muddy boots and pack outside your tent but still out of the rain.

Backpacking tents may also be equipped with gear lofts, utilizing the extra space at the top of the tent's dome for storage of small items and bags. Some tents have attachment points for flashlights or lanterns. However, you should make sure to keep sources of flame or heat away from the synthetic materials. If anyplace on earth is a natural paradise, Plitvice Lakes National Park in Croatia is that place. Of all Croatia's eight National Parks, Plitvice is the oldest and most visited. It's easy to see why. Bears and wolves lurk in its primeval forest; schools of silvery fish dart through its pristine rivers; its beech trees are a cacophony of chattering birds. The crown jewels are the 16 translucent lakes connected to each other by a breathtaking series of cascades. Dazzling as the Plitvice national park appeared on a recent visit, I couldnt help recalling that this exceptional site was a war zone during the breakup of former Yugoslavia.

Located near Croatias then- disputed border with Bosnia-Hercegovina, the parks troubles began in 1991 when the Yugoslav army seized the park and turned it into an army barracks. The Croatian army forced them out in 1995 but, a year later, the effects of war were everywhere. The area surrounding the park was a nightmarish landscape of bombed out houses and abandoned farms. The parks three hotels were shot to pieces and part of the lake system was closed while specialists removed mines from the falls and forests.

Shaking off the aura of gloom, I set out to tour the park that UNESCO had named a world heritage site. Even with only half the park open, I was soon entranced.

Miles of wooden walkways wound over, under and alongside the falls. From merry two-foot bubblers to long walls laced with foam, the falling water was everywhere. I resolved to return one day when the park had been rebuilt.

It happened that my grand return to Plitvice occurred this year at the end of a long, hard winter in central Croatia. Although I had visions of tranquil lakes shimmering under a blue sky the weather turned out to be cold, foggy and damp. But damp is good in Plitvice. Between the melting winter snow and days of rain, much of the park was a roaring mass of water. Water pounded into swollen lakes, flooded out the walkways and splashed through the trees. It was splendid.

Even better was the lack of other visitors. In the intervening nine years, Plitvice Lakes National Park has become Croatias busiest tourist attraction welcoming some 750,000 tourists a year. Nearly all come in July and August. Please tell people to come in spring and autumn, if they can my guide begged me. The newly renovated hotels are now completely booked up in the summer and the walkways are elbow to elbow with camera clickers.

Although missing the summer greenery, I quickly grew to appreciate the bare trees that allowed an unobstructed view of the lakes and falls. It was clear that the lake system is divided into four lower and twelve upper lakes. Just past the main entrance, the Korana River drops a torrent of water 258 feet into a frothing pool that begins the lower lakes. Lying at the bottom of a canyon, the narrow lower lakes are bordered by steep limestone walls and climb like a giant staircase to the upper lakes. Wider and surrounded by dense forest, the upper lakes lie on a bed of dolomite. At the very top, the White and Black rivers are the spigots that water the park. The high mineral content of the lakes explains their extraordinary colors, which range from day-glow green to deep azure.

Examining the crystalline water of the top lake, I noticed that the leaves and branches settled on the bottom were acquiring a metallic coating. It was the travertine process in action. The water absorbs minerals from the dolomite underlying the upper lakes and coats the plant life, turning it to porous travertine stone. The new travertine sprouts moss and plants that again petrify and the process repeats itself. All the barriers separating the upper lakes are composed of travertine constantly growing and changing shape.

If you go to Plitvice, you dont need to stay long enough to turn to travertine but the park merits more time than it usually gets. Lying about 85 miles north of Zadar and south of Zagreb, many people rush through the park on their way to or from the coast. Its possible to see a lot of waterfalls in three or four hours but youll need a number of days to fully explore the trails. The three-star Hotel Jezero is the best of the parks three hotels but there are plenty of small pensions and private rooms in the villages around the park.

The main island usually referred to as Zanzibar Island is a tropical and east from the mainland of Tanzania; measuring 60 miles long and 20 miles wide. The people are mostly friendly and very conservative keeping old traditions alive. Argentines are hard working people and work a 9-hour day without a nap. Families are the core of the culture and every Sunday is dedicated to spending time with loved ones. Everyone is good looking, even the dogs.

2.Is it safe? Buenos Aires is safe compared to most cities of 13 million people. The most common crime is petty theft including purse snatching and pick pocketing. You will always want to be cautious of this. But the murder rate is incredibly low, the kidnappings of the past have subsided, and there are plenty of police on the main streets to keep an eye on things.

3.What is the environment like in the city? Buenos Aires is an extremely urban environment and the noise and activity is constant. The weather is mild all year round with a few weeks in February that swelter, and a few weeks in August that get chilly. Pollution does exist on weekdays and can cause breathing troubles and the throat to itch. The streets are narrow and walking can sometimes be precarious. The architecture is a treasure trove spanning the last century.

4.What is the political situation? At the moment, politics in Argentina are stable with President Kirchner at the helm for the last 3 years and leaning toward the left. Argentines are very vocal about how they feel and there are peaceful protests around the government buildings several times a week. Throughout the last 70 years, there have been dictators and democracy and a strong rally for socialism. Despite a strong distaste for President Bush, in general the people of Buenos Aires are open minded to foreigners and enjoy meeting them.

5.How is the economy doing? The economy in Buenos Aires is thriving with small businesses, global companies, huge fashion districts, endless restaurants, and a growth in tourism. The University Of Buenos Aires is excellent and keeps the work place progressive. After the devaluation in 2001, the country had some difficult years, but now unemployment and homeless statistics are low and dropping. Foreign investment is booming and creating jobs in almost every sector.

6.Where should I stay? Choices for accommodations are staggering and each neighborhood will offer a different experience. You should rent an apartment if you are planning on staying a week or more. You should try to find lodging in a central part of the city keeping transportation costs low. Recoleta is surely the best neighborhood and very central. The Microcenter is the center of the city and most hotels and hostels are located here. Wherever you stay, make sure you are a few floors up from the street noise. It can be a serious annoyance for tourists and locals alike.

7.What should I pack? All you really need is your passport, something to help you sleep on the plane, and a camera with extra batteries. Everything else is available here at bargain prices. Laptops are accepted but cyber cafes are everywhere. Anything that cant fit in 2 suitcases may be taxed heavily at the airport. Make sure to leave plenty of room in your luggage for souvenirs. And dont forget to bring a pair of comfortable shoes.

8.What about money? Bring cash and exchange it at the airport. ATMs are plentiful but have a $300 USD limit. To exchange money in the city, go to the financial district and look for signs that say cambio and bring your passport and an address of where you are staying. Currently $1 USD is worth about 3 pesos, which is good news for the tourist. Very few places accept credit cards. Only restaurants, grocery stores, and banks will break a 100peso bill. So always carry change with you. Always!

9.Transportation. Getting around Buenos Aires for a tourist will consist of 3 methods. Subways are cheap, safe, and only crowded at rush hour. (9am and 7pm). Taxis are also inexpensive but you may be taken on the scenic route if you speak English. Always have the necessary address written down so you can hand it to the driver. And finally, walking is the best way to see the city so make sure you carry a map. For locals, the bus system is the best transportation because there are so many. If you are brave, remember when you get on a bus, always tell the driver ochenta.

10.What happens after I get off the plane? When you arrive at the Buenos Aires International Airport (Ezeiza), you will first go through immigration. Before you get in line, make sure you have filled out the visa they give you on the airplane. Hand the visa and passport to the official for stamping. After that, go to baggage claim and collect your things. When you enter the terminal, go around to the right, all the way to the back to where a blue sign says Banco. Stand in this line to exchange your money for the best rate in the airport. Next, go to the center of the terminal where an indoor white taxi stand is. Tell them Capital Federal and have an address where you are staying. The cost is about 54 pesos and you will be escorted to a white taxi that will safely take you to your lodgings.

Then at the end of the day, what could be better than a fresh seafood dinner prepared specially for you, in any one of the many oceanside restaurants that line the coastal towns. You could drive from Dublin to Galway City in a matter of a couple of hours, and with the Atlantic ocean on the west side of Ireland, and the Irish Sea bordering the east side, you had better believe that the best in North Atlantic seafood is available for you!

Zip-lock bags are extremely helpful when cooking outdoors. They come in a variety of sizes from 1 pint to 2 gallons. There is no need to buy expensive ones for most uses. You should be able to find off-brands at grocery stores, discount stores, or dollar stores. Here are some ideas and tips for using zip-lock bags to make your outdoor cooking job a little bit easier.

Pre-measure ingredients and put in zip-lock bags. For example, if you know you need 2 cups of flour for a recipe, measure those 2 cups into a zip-lock bag at home, label it, and all you have to do at the campsite is dump it in. This works great for rice, pasta, sugar, flour, instant mashed potatoes, powdered drink mix, and almost any other similar ingredient.

Pre-measuring and storing in zip-lock bags also works great for seasonings. Measure all the seasonings for a particular dish into a zip-lock bag. You don't have to take all the individual seasoning containers, nor worry about leaving one behind.

Put all the zip-lock bags and other ingredients for each meal into a large zip-lock bag (1 or 2 gallon). This keeps everything for the meal in one place. Add copies of the recipes, if needed, to the bag and you are ready to go.

Pre-mix ingredients and put in zip-lock bags. Cooking pancakes for breakfast? Mix all the dry ingredients together in a zip-lock bag, label it, then add the liquid ingredients to the bag and mix up when ready to cook. No dishes to wash. No cleanup. Just toss the empty bag in the garbage.

Zip-lock bags are perfect for marinating meat before you grill. You can even freeze the meats with the marinade, which allows you to get them ready far in advance.

Use zip-lock bags for leftovers and store in cooler. One great idea is to make omelets for the last breakfast with all the saved leftovers (depending on what you have). Just add eggs the zip-lock bags and mix up.

Precook rice or pasta at home and store in zip-lock bags. This makes it much easier to cook at the campsite, because all you have to do is heat it up.

Precut meat and store in zip-lock bags. You won't have to worry in camp about the messy cleanup needed if you do it at home. If you want to really save time, you can even pre-cook the meats and store in zip-lock bags until you needat camp. Just heat up and you are ready to go.

Precut vegetables and store in zip-lock bags. Cooking while camping can be more time consuming, but this tip will save you time by allowing you to do it ahead of time at home.

Store snacks in zip-lock bags. Trail-mix, snack mix, pretzels, dried fruit, etc., store great in zip-lock bags. You can even make separate bags for each member of your family or group so there isn't any quibbling over portions.

6)Using charts for coastal navigation can be a life saver. 7)Just like on the roads, there is the right of way. On a boating course you will learn who has the right of way and why.

8)Every boat should have a horn. You may hear one long toot or 2 short toot and so on, and youll learn what they mean.

9)There are boating regulations and laws that must be followed by all boaters, for example, (and I have seen this rule broken so many times) you are not allowed to sit on the bow of the boat with your feet hanging over board. There are many more regulations to learn and not knowing them can cost you.

10)Anchoring a boat is not just a matter of plopping it down to the sand. There is a mathematical technique applied to anchoring that has to do with the size and length of your boat. Knowing how to do this correctly will give you that extra insurance of knowing your boat is going nowhere until you want to move it.

There are many ways to enjoy pleasure boating, such as the fast pace of ski boating or the slow pace of a trawler, kayaking or canoeing. In whatever way you want to do it, it is a good idea to know the rules of the road. Then you can avoid potential situations and get on with the fun of being out there with all that sky, sun, water, family and friends.

One of the longest trails for a hiking vacation in Texas is in the Hillcountry area. The Goodwater Trail snakes around Lake Georgetown and just about totally encircles it. With numerous trailheads to select from, this hike offers abundant opportunities for a hiking vacation. The most familiar starting point for a hike along Lake Georgetown is at Cedar Breaks Park, which is at the southeastern corner of the lake. The trail starts off on a well-maintained plane of crushed stone. However, within a quarter of a mile, it turns rocky and rough along the lakeshore. Some of the most excellent views of the lake are near mile marker one on the trail and thereafter. The trail cuts through rough terrain, occasionally passing through gaps and enormous limestone boulders over six feet high. Thick clusters of cactus and Cedar also dot the area, at times partly overhanging the trail itself.

Another hiking vacation spot is one of Williamson County's newest parks, Berry Springs Park and Preserve. In a short period of time, this park has added over two miles of trails appropriate for families and beginners. The hike starts at the parking lot near waypoint Trailhead. From this spot, a paved path leads to the east and west and both end in a small loop, turning back to the trailhead. However, at each of these turnaround points, unpaved trails continue. The trail system makes a loop around much of the park's land, along with side trails bisecting it at different points along the way.

In most cases, the north shore's trails are easier, and this is mainly true of the trails on the northwest sector of the lake. They consist of wide jeep trails and dirt roads on terrain that gently undulates for several miles before it becomes a bit rougher. There are alternate trailheads at the end of West Lake Parkway at Tejas Camp and at Russell Park.

10 Lanzarote Beaches - General

Lanzarote offers a wide variety of beaches including white and black sand, placid and ruffled waters and these are, as you would expect distributed along the entire coast of the island.

Further articles posted by me discuss in more detail the best beaches in each of the seven municipalities (articles 11 to 17) and these form part of a much wider portfolio of information I'm providing to help holiday makers.

So, where is the best beach then?

As my home-from-home is in the south of the island in Playa Blanca in the municipality of Yaiza, I am somewhat biased as to where the best beach is and for me it is without doubt, Papagayo. Judging by the research Ive done on the Internet, I am not alone in this opinion, so no matter where you are staying, I would suggest that you should not miss this one out.

Punta de Papagayo (to give it its full name), is located at the southernmost tip of Lanzarote. With a surrounding landscape of volcanic ash, crystal clear water and fine white sand, this stretch of the coast , with several small bays and coves is quite simply stunning. Access is gained by first driving across a dirt track road (quite bumpy), then paying a toll (its that good, they charge you a small entrance fee), and then walking down the sand banks to the beach as there is no man-made path.

BEFORE you walk down the banks, remember to get anything you need from the one and only cafeteria in this area, as you wont want to keep trudging up and down, trust me, Ive done it. The difficulty in getting to the beach is worth it. If you decide to walk along the beach to look at other bays, please bear in mind the fact that some visitors bathe nude at this location as it is permitted. You should not encounter this in the bay by the cafeteria.

If you research this beach on the Internet more widely, you will read statements like wild at times and waves can be a little strong at times, so your instinct will, quite rightly tell you to keep an eye on the children.

I want to devote the rest of this introductory article to a day on Papagayo in the Spring of 2005.

On this particular trip, my wife decided to stay at the top of the cliff by the cafeteria, as we were not planning to stay long. I took my two sons down to the immediate bay as the children were pestering me to let them play in the sand and have a dip in the water (as children do). I did what most parents do on holiday - I gave in to their demands for a peaceful life.

My eldest son (who was 11 at the time) decided hed like to be a little braver than the younger one, who was 6 years old and who stayed in the ankles only region of the sea with me. He wandered out to a point that each wave broke about the chest to neck area and if he jumped up as the wave broke to avoid getting a mouthful of salt water.

All children do this and Im sure by now, you know whats coming. well he didnt!

I could see a rather large wave behind him out at sea and began to shout towards him to come back in a bit. He never understood my gesticulations towards him, so I moved towards him (instructing the younger one to go back up the beach immediately and stay put). For once, the younger one did as he was told and as I got closer he heard me and moved towards me. I got to within 5 metres of him before the wave crashed 15 feet above his head!

For what seemed an eternity at the time, I completely lost sight of him. He resurfaced, spluttering, and a good 30 metres away from me, which should give you an appreciation of the waves power. My son waited to see my reaction before bursting out laughing (I think he thought I would be angry with him, as if!). He was covered from head to foot in sand, had drank a pint or more of salt water and despite his brave face, he was clearly shook up and to this day we still recall that wave at Papagayo, but he had learnt his lesson and he lives to swallow salt water another day.

It is worth pointing out that both of my children are very good swimmers, having attended swimming lessons from an early age. Their reward for this, is to be given more freedom when on holiday, particularly in the swimming pools, providing we can still see them. I did not for one moment (you know I really mean that I did) think that he would not come back up, but please take my experience into account if you go to Papagayo as the warning strong waves at times is often dismissed by the occasional visitor.

But dont let this put you off, as this is truly a fantastic location and we still go back on most visits to the island.

I will to bring this article to a close with an important Safety Message - Swimming & playing in the sea is great fun, but be aware of the dangers and act responsibly and look out for Flag warnings. To this end, you should:

1. Swim parallel to the shore;
2. Swim within your depth (it can often be difficult to swim back to the Beach as currents can be strong);
3. Never swim immediately after eating;
4. Never swim alone or at night;
5. Be aware of local conditions (currents etc), seek advice if in doubt and beware of boats and jet skis if they are in the vicinity and please do not swim in areas allocated for their use;
6. Remember that a Red Flag means Dangerous Conditions, do not enter the water;
7. Remember that a Yellow Flag means Dangerous Conditions, exercise caution; and
8. Remember that a Green Flag means its Safe for swimming.

Oh and in case youre wondering, it was a Green Flag at the time of the incident with my son and it was altered to Yellow by the time we got back to the top of the cliff.

Were we unlucky? No we were lucky!
